How to Choose a Bench
Indoors, outdoors, at a table or in a hallway. Four different benches that look like one product in a photograph.
A bench is four different objects wearing one name, and the four have almost nothing in common except the shape. Deciding which one you need settles everything else.
The four benches
At a dining table. Needs chair height, around 450 mm, because it sits at the same table. Length matters because it decides how many fit. People sit for a long time, so the front edge shape matters.
In a hallway. Short sittings, usually putting shoes on. Height can be lower. Depth should be shallow so it does not block the route, and underneath it is storage whether you planned that or not.
In a living room or at the foot of a bed. Mostly an object and a surface. Comfort barely matters; proportion does.
Outdoors. Weather decides everything. Material first, comfort second.
Length, which is arithmetic
Allow roughly 530 to 600 mm per adult. At 1600 mm that is three adults comfortably, four if they are children or happy to be close.
This matters more on a bench than on chairs, because chairs declare their own boundaries and a bench does not. People leave gaps. The Concrete Bench is 1600 by 400 by 450 mm and seats four in the specification and three in practice on an ordinary evening. Bench length per person has the detail.
At a table, match the bench to the table length rather than to the number of people. A bench that overhangs a table reads as a mistake and gets kicked.
Depth and the back question
400 mm is shallow for a seat and that is deliberate on a backless bench. Without a back, a deep seat is useless, because there is nothing to lean against and the front edge ends up under your thighs.
Shallow also means a hallway bench does not block a corridor, and a dining bench tucks under a table.
No back is fine for twenty minutes. It is not fine for a three-hour dinner, and the honest fix is a wall behind it, which turns the wall into the backrest. A bench against a wall in a dining room is far more comfortable than the same bench in the middle of a room. Upholstered versus hard seating covers the time axis.
Material, which is mostly a weather question
Sealed cast concrete on powder-coated steel handles weather, wine and oil. It does not blow over. It does not move with the seasons. Outdoors it is one of very few genuinely correct answers. Which pieces can live outside has the full list.
Oiled wood is an indoor material. Oil is not a weather barrier, and outdoors wood cycles wet and dry until the grain raises and checks open.
Indoors, concrete behaves differently from wood in one way that matters: it is cold to sit on at first. Thermal mass means it takes a while to warm to you, and in an unheated hall in winter that is noticeable.
The weight question, which is the real decision
84 kg is the specification that should decide whether this is your bench.
- Two people to move it, every time, with a plan.
- Floor protection matters, because 84 kg on two plates concentrates load. On a soft floor it wants spreading. Protecting floors covers the arithmetic.
- Upstairs needs checking, both the route and the floor. Furniture weight and floor load.
- It will stay where you put it, which is a virtue outdoors and a constraint indoors.
Mass is the point of an outdoor bench and a genuine inconvenience in a flat you will leave in two years. Moving concrete furniture is worth reading before ordering, not after.
Who this bench is wrong for
- Upper floors in old buildings without checking the route and the floor.
- People who rearrange rooms. This piece is placed once.
- A hallway where it has to move for a buggy or a bike.
- Three-hour dinners with no wall behind it.
If the bench needs to move, a timber bench at a fraction of the weight is the better object, and the trade is that it stays indoors.
Reality check
- Decide which of the four benches you need first.
- 530 to 600 mm per adult. 1600 mm is three in practice.
- Shallow and backless is right for short sittings; a wall behind fixes the rest.
- Sealed concrete on coated steel is one of the few correct outdoor answers.
- 84 kg decides more than any aesthetic consideration. Plan the route first.
Common questions
- How many people fit on a 1600 mm bench?
- Three adults comfortably at about 530 mm each. Four only with children or people who know each other well.
- What height should a dining bench be?
- The same as a dining chair, around 450 mm, because it sits at the same table.
- Can a concrete bench live outside?
- A sealed cast concrete slab on coated steel is built for it. Keep the sealer maintained and the chips sealed.
- Is a bench comfortable without a back?
- For up to about twenty minutes, yes, if the height and front edge are right. For a long dinner, people want something to lean on.
